Manager Operational Risk Oversight

Help us strengthen how operational risk is understood, challenged and managed across the Society. This is an opportunity to join our second line Operational Risk Oversight team, providing independent oversight and constructive challenge across a broad and evolving risk landscape. Your insight will help senior leaders make well-informed decisions and support the safe, sustainable delivery of our strategy.

About the role

As Manager - Operational Risk Oversight, you will work closely with first line stakeholders, including Directors, to assess how effectively operational risks are identified, reported, managed and mitigated. You will combine thematic reviews, continuous oversight and horizon scanning to provide clear, evidence-based insight and challenge.

You will:

  • Independently plan and deliver thematic oversight reviews across operational risk areas, including technology, change, cyber, business continuity, data, third parties, health and safety, payments and operational resilience.

  • Provide proportionate, constructive challenge and practical advice to help the first line strengthen risk and control frameworks.

  • Represent the second line at risk forums, project steering groups and working groups, ensuring key risks and themes are visible and appropriately escalated.

  • Turn complex information into concise reporting and insight for senior management, Executive and Board-level audiences.

  • Support the continued embedding of the Enterprise Risk Management Framework and a strong, risk-aware culture.

  • Monitor emerging risks, regulatory expectations and relevant industry practice, using these insights to shape oversight activity and priorities.

  • Work collaboratively across all three lines of defence, sharing findings and supporting joined-up risk management.

About you

You will bring sound judgement, curiosity and the confidence to challenge constructively. Comfortable working independently, you will know when to go into detail and when to step back and connect themes, helping stakeholders understand both the immediate issue and the wider risk implications.

We are looking for:

  • Strong operational risk experience gained within financial services, either in a first line operational role or in risk, compliance or internal audit.

  • Demonstrable subject matter expertise in at least one operational risk area.

  • Experience assessing risk and control frameworks and translating findings into clear, practical actions.

  • The credibility and communication skills to influence senior stakeholders and deliver difficult messages in a balanced, constructive way.

  • Strong written skills, with the ability to produce succinct, decision-useful reports for senior audiences.
