Credit Risk Controls & Assurance Lead

Leeds based

Part time: 21 hours per week

As Yorkshire Building Society continues to strengthen and mature its risk management capability, we're creating a brand-new opportunity for an experienced Credit Risk professional to establish and lead our Credit Risk Controls & Assurance approach.

This role will provide independent oversight of the controls that underpin our Credit Risk framework. You'll have the autonomy to build the controls testing and assurance approach, helping ensure the Society has the robust control environment needed to support its growth ambitions while maintaining strong risk management standards.

If you're passionate about Credit Risk, enjoy providing constructive challenge, and want to make a visible impact across the organisation, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

You'll be responsible for providing testing and assurance that controls are designed effectively, operating as intended, and delivering the outcomes needed to manage risk across the Society. Working closely with senior stakeholders, you'll develop and execute a structured programme of control testing and assurance activity, helping drive a robust and continuously improving control environment.

You will create and deliver a risk-based testing plan that provides assurance over the effectiveness of key controls across the function. This will involve assessing both the design and operation of controls, identifying improvement opportunities, challenging where appropriate, and providing practical recommendations that strengthen risk management capabilities.

Working with a high degree of independence, supported by key stakeholders across the business, you'll engage with senior leaders across Credit Risk, Prudential Risk Oversight and Enterprise Risk Management, building strong relationships and providing credible insight and constructive challenge. You'll also represent Credit Risk in governance forums and periodically present findings and recommendations to senior Risk Committees.

About you

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical Credit Risk expertise with hands-on assurance, controls testing or risk oversight experience.

You’ll bring:

  • Previous experience working in a Credit Risk team, and a strong understanding of risk and control frameworks and control design principles.

  • Experience undertaking controls testing, assurance reviews, risk assessments, and providing meaningful, evidence-based conclusions.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with confidence influencing and challenging senior stakeholders.

  • Experience presenting findings, recommendations and assurance outcomes to senior committees or governance forums.

  • The ability to work independently, prioritise effectively and deliver high-quality outcomes in a complex stakeholder environment.

Ever since we started back in 1864, we’ve had a clear purpose – to do some good in our communities through helping people keep their savings safe. And helping everyone have a place to call home. Today, that purpose is still a huge part of who we are. And every one of our colleagues helps that happen.

We’re committed to volunteering our time, resources, skills and knowledge – more than 50% of colleagues contribute to thousands of volunteer hours every year. And our Charitable Foundation has now donated over £9 million to charities and good causes across the country.
