If you are looking for a role with a great purpose and a chance to develop, then joining as an Underwriter in our Mortgage team could well be the opportunity for you.
Our underwriters undertake key commercial work for YBS, but importantly they also help people buy their homes, and that is something you can proud of.
About the role
As Mortgage Underwriter you’ll be responsible for making excellent lending decisions that are in line with our risk policy for new mortgages.
Day to day you’ll own and manage mortgage applications from receipt to the release of funds and carry out risk assessments. Using your knowledge and experience, you also challenge lending decisions, build great relationships with internal and external stakeholders and manage your work in line with service standards.
All of this is underpinned with an appreciation of the customer. You’ll deliver fair outcomes for them, provide a great service and tailor your approach to customer requirements. You’ll be first line of defence for any complaints and communicate lending decisions with customers clearly and effectively.
This is an exciting role where you can balance the needs of customers, intermediaries and responsible lending every day.
Please Note: This role is mainly office based, hybrid working can be offered once fully competent in the role, however you will be expected to be in the office 2-3 days a week. Please be aware that your full training period will require full time attendance in the office ( Yorrkshire Drive Bradford).
About you
Ideally, you have experience as a Mortgage Underwriter but don’t be dissuaded from applying if not. If you have underwriting experience on different types of financial products, have extensive experience/knowledge of mortgages or within customer service then we’d love to hear from you.
Alongside this, you’ll need:
- Great time management skills
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to communicate with a range of people internally and externally
- Analytical and methodical thinking, with a natural ability to be curious and identify where further information will be required
- Excellent decision-making skills with an aptitude for making appropriate lending decisions in a fair and consistent manner.
About us:
At YBS we don’t have shareholders, we have members. We care about people and that includes you. So here, you’ll be respected for who you are, you’ll be able to bring your whole self to work, and you’ll have everything you need to build a long and rewarding career.

Connect with Sophie HarrisonI recruit for the following business areas: People, Risk, Internal Audit & Commercial (excluding digital channels)
I joined YBS in October 2021. Prior to this I spent 5 years working within other financial services, gaining experience in internal recruitment, and ultimately realising this was the career I was passionate about.
I have been fortunate enough throughout my years in recruitment to recruit for lots of different areas but I currently specialise in our head office functions, supporting hiring managers with their resourcing needs and supporting candidates to achieve their full potential throughout our recruitment process.

Olivia Lambert
Resourcing & Inclusion Specialist
Connect with Olivia LambertI recruit for the following business areas: Commercial (excluding digital channels), Internal Audit, People & Risk
I joined the Society in 2017, and throughout that time I have worked in several departments, learning and growing along the way. However, it wasn't until April 2022 that I finally discovered my passion, which is recruitment.
In my current role with the Resourcing & Inclusion team, I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with many amazing teams across the business. I absolutely love helping hiring managers find their perfect candidates, and it's equally rewarding to assist candidates in landing their dream jobs.
