Few roles offer the chance to influence both the strategic direction and practical implementation of an emerging capability. The People Risk & Governance Manager will play a central role in determining how we identify, assess and manage People Risk across the Society, a growing strategic priority at Yorkshire Building Society. The foundations are in place, but the most exciting part of the journey lies ahead.
About the Role
As a People Risk & Governance Manager, you'll play a key role in shaping and embedding how People Risk is identified, assessed and managed across the Society. Working closely with senior leaders, you'll help strengthen our risk culture, develop robust frameworks, influence strategic decision-making and ensure our People Division operates within an effective governance and control environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading initiatives that enhance People Risk maturity across the Society.
- Developing and embedding People Risk frameworks, standards and governance processes.
- Providing expert advice and challenge on People Risk matters to senior stakeholders.
- Defining and embedding People Risk Appetite and associated reporting.
- Leading risk and control assessments and supporting assurance activity across the People Division.
- Monitoring emerging legislation, regulation and external developments, translating requirements into practical change initiatives.
- Supporting leaders within People Division to understand, manage and mitigate the full range of risks within their remit, including People, Operational, Strategic, Financial and Change Risks.
- Coaching and developing colleagues within the People Risk team to enhance capability and impact.
Whilst this role will initially focus on People Risk governance, risk appetite, frameworks, controls and regulatory change, you'll also have the opportunity, over time, to broaden your expertise across the full People Risk landscape through cross-skilling into areas such as the Senior Managers & Certification Regime (SMCR) and Trade Union relationship management, supporting a resilient and collaborative team model.
About You
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys combining strategic thinking with practical delivery and wants to build capability rather than simply maintain it. We're looking for someone who can bring strong risk management expertise together with excellent stakeholder engagement and influencing skills.
You'll likely have:
- Significant experience in risk management, governance or control environments within a regulated organisation.
- Experience designing, implementing or enhancing risk frameworks, controls or governance processes.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret information, deliver meaningful insight and use it to inform strategic decision-making.
- Proven ability to influence and challenge senior stakeholders constructively.
- Experience leading complex change initiatives and embedding sustainable improvements.
- Experience of working within the regulatory and legislative frameworks that govern people-related activity in financial services (or other similar industry), translating regulatory requirements, employment legislation and wider governance obligations into practical organisational outcomes.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to build trusted relationships across a wide range of stakeholders.
- The ability to coach, support and develop others.
Experience within Human Resources, People Risk, Operational Risk, Enterprise Risk or Compliance would be particularly valuable.
