Rupinder's story: A bold leap from mortgage advice to digital
What was your previous role and what are you doing now?
‘I started as a customer service rep in Mortgage Advice, became a team manager, and after maternity leave, moved into Digital. Now, I’m a digital product owner shaping the savings ID&V customer journey.’
What new skills have you learned?
‘Agile working, product thinking, using data to prioritise customer needs, and collaborating closely with developers and designers. It’s been a steep but rewarding learning curve.’
How did reskilling feel?
‘Daunting. I went from feeling confident to being a beginner again, losing some credibility I’d built. But the support around me helped me see my transferable skills and shift my mindset.’
Biggest challenge and win?
‘Confidence, especially public speaking. Co-chairing the ethnicity network helped me find my voice. Biggest win is stopping the second-guessing and gaining clarity.’
Advice to someone about reskilling?
‘The only way to truly fail is not to try. Give it a go. You’ve got everything to gain. Even if it’s not right, you’ll learn a lot about yourself.’
Unexpected skills you enjoyed?
‘Data. At first overwhelming, now I enjoy using data to understand customers and make decisions.’
How has it changed your view of your career?
‘I don’t see a fixed path anymore. I’m motivated by making a meaningful impact. I also miss people leadership and might return to it. Skills are transferable, it’s about applying them in new ways.’
New doors opened?
‘I focus on where my skills make a difference now. I’ve built strengths in problem-solving, stakeholder management, and leading teams. Embracing my identity has also helped me connect more inclusively.’
Advice to past self?
‘Don’t wait to tick every box before applying. If you believe you can add value, go for it. Also, don’t let rejection knock your confidence. It’s feedback, not failure.’
Myth to bust?
‘Reskilling isn’t starting over. It’s building on what you already have. You don’t need formal education, just a willingness to learn.’
Other development that helped?
‘Future Skills Insight Tool, and a mentor who helped me tackle imposter syndrome.’
