Dan's story: Embracing change and building new skills
What did you used to do and what are you doing now?
‘I was a product development manager in Mortgage and Savings Trading, and before that, an implementation manager in Mortgage Underwriting. Now, I’m a digital product owner. I define the vision for customer journeys in the YBS mobile app, decide what to work on next, and help the team deliver value.’
What’s different about your new role?
‘A lot. I’ve learned Agile and Scrum delivery, digital tech, and how to work closely with third-party suppliers like Mitek, who help verify customer identities. It’s a whole new world compared to before.’
How did it feel to reskill?
‘Honestly? Nervous and excited. Stepping out of my comfort zone to work with new people and ways of working was daunting. But learning something completely new was invigorating.’
What’s been the biggest challenge and benefit?
‘The hardest part was getting used to new terms and tech. At first, I wasn’t confident answering questions. The best part has been broadening my skills and growing personally and professionally.’
What would you say to someone hesitant about reskilling?
‘Embrace it. Everyone feels nervous about change. YBS gave me all the training and support I needed. Once you get stuck in, you won’t look back.’
Any unexpected skills you enjoyed learning?
‘Communication. I now work with lots of stakeholders in different ways, and I really enjoy it. I hope I’m making a difference in how we connect and collaborate.’
How has reskilling changed your career view?
‘It’s given me drive and direction. I love Agile and digital work, and I see how I add value to YBS. That’s a great feeling.’
New opportunities you see now?
‘I’m more involved in work that supports YBS’s strategy and have the autonomy to shape how we deliver it. It’s empowering.’
If you could go back, what advice would you give yourself?
‘Don’t be afraid to ask questions or say when you don’t know something. That’s how you learn.’
Any myths about reskilling?
‘That you can’t do it. That’s not true. Reskilling is learning, and anyone can do it with the right mindset.’
