Using feedback to move forward

Colleagues working together in the office

Feedback isn’t always easy to hear. But it can be a valuable part of your development.

If you’re going through the redeployment process and don’t get an interview or an offer, we’ll always email you with the outcome and give you the option to request feedback directly from the hiring manager if you want it. It’s something we’d really encourage you to do – as the benefits can far outweigh the negatives.

Why ask for feedback?

Even if it feels difficult at first, feedback can be useful. It helps you see how others view your strengths and where there might be room to grow.

It can also:

  • Highlight where your skills could apply in new or different ways
  • Increase your chances of success by tailoring how you apply or refine your interview skills
  • Help to support your broader growth and development, wherever your career journey takes you.

Getting the most from feedback

A few simple steps can help you make the most of a feedback conversation.

Start by listening.

Let the person finish before you respond. Focus on understanding, rather than jumping in straightaway.

Try to stay open-minded.

Be receptive to new ideas ask yourself if there’s something helpful in what was said.

Focus on the message.

Focus on the message rather than how it’s delivered. If something didn’t land well, ask for clarity so you understand what they meant.

Respond don’t react.

Take time to reflect.

Think about what feels relevant, consider the impact of acting on it or not, and decide what to do next. If anything seems unclear, it’s fine to follow up with questions.

Unsure on the feedback you've received?

If you’re unsure about the feedback or would like another perspective, consider asking someone you trust. Your consultation lead or line manager can also be a helpful source of support. And if you decide to make changes to your CV or interview approach, the Internal Mobility Team is here to help.
